History

The Sir George, in the small historic town of Jugiong, was built in 1845 by Irish settler John Philip Sheahan. During the 19th Century, it was a popular mid-way stop for drovers, coaches, and travellers to break their journey between Sydney and Melbourne.

Visitors could rest and enjoy a drink by the fire, while exchanging a story or two.

By the late 20th Century, as traffic along the Hume Highway was diverted away from Jugiong, The Sir George fell into decline, and eventually fell into disrepair. However in the early 2010s, mother-and-daughter duo Liz Prater and Kate Hufton, both passionate about historical preservation, saw the potential for its revival.

A significant restoration project spanning several years saw The Sir George returned to its former glory, with great care to retain the building’s original structure. Fascinating artefacts from the past, including old coins, bottles, and even remnants of structures hidden within the walls, were discovered during the process - each adding a layer to the building’s story.

Today, the main pub building is almost the same as it was over 180 years ago, with its thick stone walls, old floorboards handcrafted from ship decking, rustic timber beams, and two original open fireplaces.

The project also involved careful reconstruction of the stone Stables that date to 1845, converting them into three luxurious heritage suites. Fittingly, they were rebuilt by the great, great Grandson of the original proprietor, John Phillip Sheahan.

The breathtaking gardens throughout the property were also designed by Liz Prater. Guests can enjoy relaxing in the pub’s beautiful beer garden, or browsing The Potting Shed, for gardening-inspired homewares and gifts.

Whether you are stopping by to dine, or staying as a valued guest, The Sir George allows you to step back in time, and soak up the history of a treasured part of Australia’s heritage.

Heritage Stables Accommodation

Within the stone Stables building are three luxurious rooms, all featuring king beds dressed with Hale Mercantile linens. Beds can be converted to twin beds if required, and an additional bed can be added for a third guest. Stylish interiors with a neutral colour palette, natural textures, French basket chandeliers, and century-old reclaimed flooring allow the stunning stone walls to take centre stage.

Each private ensuite features plush towels and complimentary Mr Smith bath and body products. Mini bars have a selection of local wines, along with a gourmet cheese plate to enjoy overlooking the gardens.

A generous continental breakfast is also included in your stay - with Sir George Sourdough, Sir George granola and berry compote with greek yoghurt, Long Track Pantry condiments, Pepe Saya Butter, juice, tea, and in-room Nespresso coffee machine.

Black Barn Accommodation

The Black Barns were sympathetically designed as a modern interpretation of the original outbuilding on the property. Choose from one of four Luxury Black Barns sleeping up to 3 guests, 2 Superior Black Barns with king single bunk beds sleeping up to 5 guests, or 2 Accessible Black Barns also sleeping 5 guests.

Beautifully furnished, The Black Barns also feature Hale Mercantile Linens, Mr Smith bathroom amenities, mini bar, Nespresso coffee machine, and The Sir George’s fabulous breakfast as part of your stay experience.

Rainy days are best spent curled up with a good book with tea from your in-room selection, or playing a quiet game of chess while watching the rain tap gently against the windows. And the incredible gardens are simply magical in all seasons. Spend a leisurely afternoon in a shady spot with glass of wine, before heading to the historic pub for dinner.

Dine & Shop

The Sir George offers a range of dining options just a stroll from your accommodation, with a seasonal menu focused on local produce. The courtyard garden is the perfect spot for a long lunch, or a delicious cheese platter with drinks.

Come evening, wander down to the pub and unwind by the crackling open fire with a glass of local wine, or a specialty cocktail. Indulge in The Sir George’s traditional roast dinner, followed by one of their signature desserts.

Also during your stay, shop at Curators Collective, upstairs in The Sir George, for beautiful homewares, fashion and gifts. And in the garden, browse The Potting Shed for seasonal plants and gardening gifts.

An absolutely perfect stay! We were blown away with the beautiful setting and buildings, the manicured gardens, and our accommodation. Super stylish, with very comfortable bed & pillows, and a fabulous breakfast. The extra treats were a special touch! Dinner was spent in the garden with delicious food & wine. Amazing! We will be back.
