With breathtaking coastal views, The Dreamers Night Inn is one of Kaipara Harbour’s oldest remaining cottages.

History

Perched above the ever-changing tides of Kaipara Harbour, The Dreamers Night Inn is a lovingly restored, late 19th-century cottage that blends heritage charm with a relaxed coastal style. Originally home to one of Kaipara Harbour’s early settler families, the cottage is simple in form, constructed with timber cut from nearby kauri forests.

A recent restoration carefully preserved timber-lined walls and ceilings, original floorboards, and charming dormer windows. Contemporary design, natural textures, and soft lighting evoke a sense of tranquillity, and reflect the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Accommodation

2 Bedrooms — 1 Bathroom — Sleeps 4 — Family & Pet Friendly

Two restful bedrooms capture beautiful views of the gardens and the harbour beyond, with queen beds dressed in soft, pure linens. The bathroom features a restored clawfoot bath - enjoy long soaks under the open window, letting the sea breeze in.

With thoughtfully-curated antiques and vintage pieces echoing times past, the cottage’s coastal interior has a relaxed, lived-in feel. In the cosy lounge lit by a roaring open fire, books and blankets are within easy reach.

And the painter’s loft, with antique furniture tucked under sloping ceilings and sweeping views of the harbour, is an inspiring space for creative pursuits.

Start the day slowly with coffee on the wide, sun-lit verandah, listening to the birds, before following the private bush track to the quiet beach below - perfect for morning swims, shell collecting, or casting a line from one of Kaipara’s most-loved fishing spots. At sunset, low tide reveals perfect stretches for strolls with your four-legged companions.

And as evening falls, sink into the handcrafted wood-fired cedar hot tub, nestled beneath fifty-year old Mediterranean olive trees. Kept at a consistent 38°C, the hot tub offers the ultimate in relaxation, perfectly positioned for stargazing or watching the tides roll in.

Quite easily one of the best stays I have had in New Zealand, and the large cedar hot tub was total luxury. The cottage exceeded all our expectations.

Things To Do

Pahi is a sleepy waterfront village set within unspoilt natural beauty. Just 90 minutes from Auckland, it feels a world away from city life. Take long walks along the foreshore at low tide, and stroll to the Pahi wharf for a quiet afternoon of fishing. Explore the nearby Matakohe Kauri Museum for a glimpse into the area’s rich settler and Māori heritage.

Further afield, Paparoa offers farmer’s markets, bush walks, and hidden swimming holes. But the greatest treasures are right here: the salt on your skin, the sound of tūī at dusk, and the soothing sound of waves below the verandah.
