Yarrum Downs House, 1901
History
Yarrum Downs House is a stunning example of grand Federation architecture, where the ornate beauty of European Queen Anne Style design is coupled with a wraparound verandah to suit our Australian climate. Originally a notable residence in Murwillumbah, where dances were held in then-famous ballroom, it later served as a maternity hospital. Later in 1983, it was relocated to its current position on 50 acres of tranquil farmland, a short drive from Pottsville Beach.
A true work of art, the house has original heritage charm throughout, including two entry doors with elaborate leadlight panels, soaring 5.5 metre high ceilings with different pressed-metal patterns in each room, teak floorboards, Kauri pine woodwork, and three bay windows with walk-through sash windows and pink & green leadlight. The lounge, once the ballroom, features a remarkable oval 12-paned window, and beautiful original fireplace and surround.

A cot is also available for families with little ones. All bedrooms are light and airy, with quality linens, antique furniture, and picturesque views of the surrounding countryside.

Gather for meals in the farmhouse kitchen - fully equipped with a SMEG oven, two fridges and a coffee machine. An antique dining table and dresser, meat safe and dough box bring a sense of yesteryear into the space: the kitchen dresser was sent from Sydney to Ballina by steamer, then transported by wagon to Cudgera Creek in 1977. Tea, coffee, condiments and milk are provided for guests, along with a welcome hamper of wine, beer, and local honey.
Relax in the lounge by the fire and play chess, or watch your favourite movies on the large Smart TV. There’s also a library with a range of books for all ages and interests - choose a book and spend an afternoon on the verandah, taking in views of the gardens and undulating countryside.
Outdoors, there are plenty of places to unwind - a fire pit area with sandstone seating, landscaped inground pool with deck area, lounges, and shade umbrellas, and also a separate outdoor entertaining area with BBQ. Gather around the fire pit each evening, perfect for stargazing and reconnecting with loved ones.
And follow the walking track to the freshwater lake, where you might meet the property’s friendly cattle along the way.
