History

The Burrows has sat overlooking Great Oyster Bay and the rugged landscape of Tasmania’s east coast since the 1860s. Originally a small stone cottage with timber shingled roof, it was held in the same family for over 150 years. During this time, additions were made to the building, and more recently, owners Bek & Paul have sensitively restored the cottage to transform it into a luxurious, secluded coastal retreat for adults.

Swansea is one of Tasmania’s oldest towns, established in 1821. Long before this, the Oyster Bay Aboriginal Nation thrived here, fishing from the plentiful waters of Great Oyster Bay. Today, Swansea still holds the nostalgic charm of a quiet fishing village, dotted with 19th century churches, inns and cottages, that carry the stories of early farming families.

Things To Do

The Burrows is the perfect escape from it all, so why leave! On a rainy day, light the fire, settle in and watch the weather change across Great Oyster Bay from the large window seat. Curl up on the lounge with a good book…and with a glass of local sparkling, enjoy a long soak in the clawfoot bath with expansive views.

If you do decide to venture out, Swansea and the local area won’t disappoint. A small historic township looking across to Freycinet National Park, it has a significant number of charming heritage buildings. Explore the majestic coastline, including two beaches close by - Spiky Beach, south of The Burrows, is a protected cove with the most amazing shells; and further along is Kelvedon beach that’s a perfect stretch for a brisk walk.

Michaela at Cake & Honey currently in pop-up mode on Franklin Street, will have your coffee fix covered, along with her homemade sweet treats - ocean views with your morning brews! Next door, you'll find Barebones Art Space & Emporium, brimming with amazing art, books, cards, handmade ceramics, interesting clothing and a range of local Tasmanian providore items.

You will be spoilt for choice with many vineyards within a short drive, producing some of Tasmania’s finest wines. Gala Estate's cellar door is definitely worth a visit - their vintage sparkling rose is a favourite to take back to The Burrows. Enjoy with a dozen fresh local Melshell Oysters just up the road.

Enjoy delicious wood-fired pizza by the fire or on the deck with stunning views at Mayfield Estate. Why not arrange a wine tasting, and be sure to take home a bottle of their superb Sophia's Gin.

Launceston and Hobart are both less than 2 hours away.
