The Bootmaker’s House, 1920
History
With over a century of history within its walls, The Bootmaker's House was originally built as a shop and residence, with the shop at the front - the J. Pickering Bootstore. Here, John Pickering, the town’s bootmaker would sit and repair boots, no doubt chatting to locals as they passed by.
The bootstore served the township for several decades, changing hands over the years - to Mick Ammon in the 1930s before he went to war, then to Joe Mountford, who ran the shop during World War II.
Around 1950, Douglas & Edna Craigie sold their nearby farm, Jalbarragup Homestead, to move into the residence and take over the bootmaking business.
Part of the Boojarah region of Western Australia, the word ‘Nannup’ is of Noongar origin, meaning ‘stopping place’. Steeped in history, Nannup dates to 1834, and The Bootmaker’s House sits in the heart of town. Everything is on your doorstep - from cafes and shops, scenic nature walks, and the majestic heritage forests of the South West.
Lovingly restored, the white weatherboard cottage features high ceilings with ornate pressed metal ceilings, polished wood floors, Jarrah sash windows, fireplace surrounds, the original Metters cast iron oven in the kitchen, and shady front and back verandahs.

“Cosy and comfortable, full of character and beautifully decorated, with lots of thoughtful touches that made us feel right at home. The fireplace was lovely and warm, and we spent hours in the backyard basking in the evening sun, watching monarch butterflies flutter, and listening to splendid fairy wrens chirping. Jess was also a very responsive and welcoming host.”
