Palazzo Campania, 1879

History

Nestled in the Coal River Valley just over 30 minutes from Hobart, Palazzo Campania was built in 1879 as a grand country residence. Constructed with handmade bricks and local sandstone, this much-loved heritage landmark is a rare example of Tasmanian Italianate architecture with Georgian elements, including an elegant front entry with fanlight window, tall Kingbilly sash windows, baltic pine floorboards, sweeping central staircase, and 12-foot ceilings in the original ballroom.

Serving as the Campania General Store for over a century, a deep sense of history lies within its walls, shaped by generations past. The restoration approach was to carefully reveal and honour the true spirit of the home, allowing heritage details and Mediterranean charm to once again take centre stage. Old materials were repaired wherever possible, and replaced only where necessary. Modern comforts were added in sympathy to the building’s heritage.

Today, Palazzo Campania enters a new chapter, welcoming guests for stays, and also as a unique, atmospheric space for small celebrations and special gatherings.
