The Stables at Newry Farm, 1815
History
Nestled in the peaceful countryside, with a backdrop of one of Tasmania’s most admired natural wonders, the Great Western Tiers - The Stables at Newry Farm was built by convicts between 1815 - 1840. With original handmade bricks, wooden ceiling beams, and timeworn floorboards in the upstairs bedroom, an architect-led restoration has artfully retained a historic feel throughout, balanced with modern comforts.
Now a luxurious, fully self-contained retreat exclusively for adults, The Stables is the ultimate country escape for couples seeking tranquillity. Within the building are two fully self-contained accommodation options, The Stables and The Garden Room, both sleeping two adults. Together, they offer a perfect balance of privacy and shared spaces.
The Stables
2 guests — 1 Bedroom — 1 Bathroom
Designed as a cosy, luxurious retreat for 2 adults, The Stables is entirely yours during your stay. Under rustic convict-cut beams, on the ground floor is an open plan kitchen, living and dining space. Follow the reclaimed Tasmanian Oak staircase up to the simply, yet beautifully-appointed loft bedroom with a comfortable queen bed, ensuite bathroom, and picturesque country views.
The Stables can accommodate a third adult upon request, at an additional cost. Completely self-contained with full laundry facilities, The Stables is the perfect base from which to explore Northern Tasmania.
In the cosy sitting room, curl up on the spacious lounge in front of the wood-fired heater, and watch your favourite shows on the Smart TV. There’s also high speed WiFi throughout the building.
The fully-equipped farmhouse kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals, with a generous continental breakfast provided upon arrival.
Your host Angela is also an experienced chef, caterer, and former restaurateur, passionate about utilising local, seasonal produce. Should you be interested in having gourmet meals delivered to The Stables, advise Angela when booking (minimum of 4 people, and subject to availability).
The Garden Room
2 guests — 1 Bedroom — 1 Bathroom
Adjoining The Stables accommodation, yet completely private, The Garden Room has a queen bed and its own ensuite bathroom. With contemporary furnishings offset by beautiful exposed brickwork, wake slowly to tranquil views over the farm and the Great Western Tiers.
The Garden Room also has its own fully-equipped kitchen and sunny dining area. In the morning, open up the French doors that lead to an outdoor sitting area, and enjoy a leisurely breakfast while taking in views of the established gardens.
Guests are invited to explore the farm’s stunning surrounds during their stay. Follow walking paths framed with hedges through rambling, English-style cottage gardens, shaded by towering heritage trees.
Adjacent to The Stables is a clay tennis court - with racquets and balls provided - and an inground swimming pool nestled within the gardens. Play a game of tennis and take a dip, before enjoying a BBQ picnic lunch on the lawn.
And with sweeping views across a majestic river valley to the Great Western Tiers, and extensive frontage to the South Esk River, Newry Farm is truly Tasmanian countryside at its best. Meet the resident hens and pet sheep Lachie and Sam, and spend an afternoon fishing in the river, with rods & fishing equipment available for use.
“The Stables have been painstakingly restored, and the accommodation so cosy we were sad to leave! The kitchen was well-appointed with delicious breakfast provisions, and the upstairs bed was so comfortable. I especially loved the old floorboards and ceiling beams. Angela was a very thoughtful host. Thank you for the most wonderful stay!”
