Lumière Lodge, 1890

Built in 1890, Lumière Lodge has been beautifully restored & designed in the Victorian Style. Photograph by Lean Timms

Tucked along a quiet, tree-lined street in historic West Hobart, Lumière Lodge is a late Victorian home thoughtfully restored and reimagined by its custodians, Kerran and Samuel. Once listed by the National Trust, the house remains a tribute to Old Hobart Town - nostalgic, elegant, and richly layered.

Inside, moody-toned walls and linens, textured wallpapers, antique oil paintings, chandeliers, and eccentric vintage curios create an atmosphere both romantic and lived in. Every element has been chosen with care - not to replicate the past, but to honour it with warmth and character.

Accommodation

Sleeps 6 | Bedrooms 3 | Bathrooms 3

With three bedrooms, each with their own luxurious, light-filled bathroom, the home offers comfort and charm in equal measure. Mornings begin with golden light through tall sash windows, and often, the scent of pastries warming in the oven. As the day unfolds, guests might sip coffee in the fern-fringed garden, unwind with a drink beside the fire, or draw a candlelit bath beneath the stained-glass window or under the stars in the attic suite.

Lumière Lodge is more than a place to stay - it is a home. Your hosts personally curate each visit with seasonal Tasmanian provisions, fresh flowers, and thoughtful touches from local makers. For those staying longer, a quiet morning delivery of fresh bakery goods arrives on the doorstep - wrapped and waiting.

Expect little luxuries throughout: Le Labo amenities, soft-washed linen sheets, an honesty bar with Tasmanian and French wines, and a fully equipped English kitchen for fireside feasting.

For dreamers, creatives, and those who seek beauty in the quiet details - Lumière Lodge offers a stay both rooted in history and alive with the spirit of now.

Things To Do

Though just a three-minute drive from Hobart’s centre and five minutes from Salamanca Place, Lumière Lodge feels quietly removed from the bustle. Around the corner from the cottage, you will find Hill Street Grocer - brimming with gourmet produce, local cheeses, and Tasmanian wines - and just beyond, Ogee, a mood-lit neighbourhood wine bar where records spin and pasta is made by hand.

On Sundays, take the scenic fifteen-minute walk down Elizabeth Street to Farm Gate Market - a vibrant celebration of Tasmania’s growers and makers. On Saturdays, Salamanca Market comes alive beneath its Georgian warehouses, offering everything from Huon pine trinkets and handmade ceramics to fresh pastries, fruit, and flowers.

Make time for a visit to Cascade Brewery, the oldest in Australia, nestled at the foot of kunanyi / Mount Wellington - or, for a more refined indulgence, book a table at Institut Polaire, where cool-climate wines and Nordic-inspired dishes are served with quiet precision.

For those wishing to roam further, Lumière Lodge is perfectly placed for day trips - to the vineyards, restaurants, and antique stores of the Derwent Valley, the windswept beauty of Bruny Island (with a stop at the famed Bruny Island Cheese Co. and oyster farm), or the misty summit of kunanyi. Or, take the ferry from Brooke Street Pier and sail upriver to MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art - an otherworldly experience from embarkation to exhibition.

Wherever the day leads, you’ll return to a house aglow with welcome - a place that feels, in every sense, like home.
